Nine Days Left

Posted on August 28, 2010, in Personal by Toad · 2 Comments

Summer is, sadly, coming to an end. Nine days from now I’ll be getting ready for the first day of my junior year of high school. Due to my laziness, I’m going to be spending my last week of summer catching up on summer reading and doing my Pre-Calculus packet. Plus, my school schedule seems to be pretty bad. I have one of the worst teachers in the school for AP Language and Composition, and I don’t appear to have any friends in my classes. Can’t wait!

Although I’m sad to see summer go, I’d be lying if I said this was a good summer. It wasn’t. My grandpa died on the first full day of my summer vacation. A week or two later, my grandma became extremely depressed due to my grandpa’s passing. She couldn’t eat, she had no energy, and she ended up losing over thirty pounds before she started feeling better (which only happened within the past two weeks). Our puppy, despite being absolutely adorable, is a nightmare. My family has spent the entire summer trying to get him to stop biting, attacking the cats, jumping on things, etc. We’ve even hired dog trainers, and so far they haven’t been able to help us at all. It’s just been a very stressful and emotionally draining summer.

Up until this past Thursday (August 26), I had essentially spent every day sitting around the house, either browsing the Internet, playing video games, or simply listening to music and staring at a wall. Fortunately, my friend and I drove down to Six Flags Great Adventure on Thursday and then spent the next day at the beach. That was, essentially, the only fun thing I’ve done this summer. I had a great time, though, and I’m happy that I’ll actually have an answer if someone at school asks if I did anything fun over the summer.

EDIT: To make matters much worse, my second cousin committed suicide on Monday, August 30. Rest in peace, Greg.

The Oregon Trail

This game is amazing, and that is why I decided to do a “Let’s Play” (LP) of it.

The commentary is a bit meh. I’m sure over time I’ll get better at it, but it feels kinda weird talking to yourself for fifteen minutes the first few times you do it. xD

Casual and Proud

I’m a casual gamer.

Now, before you accuse me of liking games such as Carnival Games, allow me to explain myself. I play games casually, and, therefore, I’m a casual gamer. Rocket science? No? Good, I don’t think so either.

The way people throw around the term “casual gamer” these days seems completely wrong to me. If you’re branded as a “casual gamer,” it automatically means you love shovelware and minigame compilations. Why? Well, because that’s what everyone else likes to think! And if everyone seems to follow the same train of thought, then it must be true!

I like to call myself a casual gamer. That doesn’t mean I enjoy shovelware. I still love playing Zelda games, Mario games, Halo games, some indie games, and more. I’m not saying these games are “hardcore.” I’m simply trying to prove that I can be a casual gamer and still play the “big boy” games.

Why is it that the term has become an insult for the “hardcore” gamers to throw around? I declare bullshit. We’re all gamers. Who cares what games we play? Who cares how often we play? Can’t we all just agree that we’re all gamers and that we have no lives?

I know that was a bit unorganized and it wasn’t exactly well thought-out, but I hope you understand where I’m coming from. The whole rant sounded a lot better in my head, so I’m sorry if I bored you.

Also, on a completely unrelated note, I’m going to be experimenting with using my headset to record myself playing violin and piano. If the sound quality is decent, I may start recording and uploading some videos. I’ll keep you posted.

DCYO Concert (Spring 2010)

In an earlier post, I posted the recordings of my Fall 2009 concert in DCYO. Well, it’s that time of year again!

As I said the first time, this is a high school orchestra; there WILL be mistakes (lots of them). Just listen to the trumpets in the beginning of the first piece, and you’ll know what I mean.

Laptop Fail

Posted on August 2, 2010, in Personal by Toad · No Comments

My laptop (Toshiba) is essentially dead. Vista went kablooey, and it no longer loads (side note: according to Dictionary.com, “kablooey” is a word). I realized that I had a serious problem when Vista still hadn’t loaded after an hour of my staring at the Vista loading screen. Upon trying to boot up again, I decided to try safe mode. However, it would hang at crcdisk.sys every single time (which is apparently a somewhat common problem with Windows Vista). Upon doing some research, I discovered that most of the solutions required the Vista Install DVD (which I don’t have). Feeling absolutely helpless, I raged.

I’m currently writing this post on my old laptop (Acer), which happens to be extremely loud. Following Roland‘s advice, I burned Ubuntu onto a CD and I currently have it running on the Toshiba. I’ve been transferring all of my files from the Toshiba to my Acer for the past few hours, and I’m planning on installing Windows 7 on the Toshiba once all of the transfers are complete. My only worry is that as soon as I start installing it and all of the files are erased, I’ll suddenly remember I forgot to transfer something.

Anway, kind of a useless post, but I figured I’d fill you in on what’s going on. Hopefully everything will be back to normal later today or tomorrow.
